AWSome Day Serbia

Dev/Ops, Events, News

We decided to move ManageWP Orion to AWS recently and it has been an exciting journey for us all. We learned new skills and on top of that became the first APN Technology Partner in South-East Europe. In light of this we have created AWSome Day to share our experience and AWS story.

Why We Made The Switch

Around a year and a half ago we decided to move our new product ManageWP Orion on AWS because EC2 has radically simplified the way we run software, by hugely lowering the amount of work we needed to do in order to be sure that our infrastructure is stable and also highly scalable.

We wanted to be able to scale to any size at any time without limiting ourselves by having to set up or manage physical servers. A cloud provider with good automation support was thus the only viable option for us.

So we chose Amazon Web Services.

What Makes AWS Great

The first and most important thing to know about AWS is that it is not merely a virtualized hosting service. A better way of thinking about it is as employing a fractional system and network administrator: instead of employing one very expensive person to do a whole lot of automation for you, you instead pay a little bit more for every box you own, and you have a whole set of problems subtracted away.

I do not think that it is an exaggeration to say that Amazon Web Services has radically changed the economics of running a technology company, but it seems that most people do not really understand by how much.

In fact,  nobody thinks about how many companies are actually using Amazon somewhere in their stack until it has an outage, and suddenly it seems like half the Internet goes away.

You Need to Learn AWS

However AWS has it’s on quirks and rules that you need to learn – so we had to spend a lot of time learning how to use it properly. The time we invested in this paid off, we learned a lot and decided to certify our System Engineers and enter the Amazon Partners Program. On the 9th of March 2016. Devana became the first APN Technology Partner in South-East Europe thanks to the assistance and significant support from the first regional AWS Consulting partner company CLOUDWEBOPS.

What is APN

APN is a tiered program comprised of Consulting and Technology Partners, who graduate through the tiers based on their level of engagement with AWS. In addition, Partners can join fundamental programs designed to support their unique AWS-based business.
